Could the age-old remedy called Bone Broth enhance Britain’s dogs’ health

The World’s First Biome Broth Study Launches with Exciting Prizes!

Boil and Broth, alongside Canine Nutritionist Anna Webb, PhD Microbiologist Dr. Carol Hughes (Biome4Pets), and Aberystwyth University, has launched the world’s first Biome Broth Study for dogs.

The question, could the age-old natural remedy of Bone Broth help address a wellness crisis in Britain’s dogs?

Science at a human level is burgeoning on the microbiome. It’s the home to trillions of bacteria comprising of 80 per cent of the immune system and is crucial to optimise health, minimise disease, and promote longevity.

Boil and Broth is a local Dorset business founded by Rachel Down in 2018 after she discovered bone broth helped her to lose 6 stone and reverse her health condition. Rachel says, “This is a groundbreaking study something I have been passionate about for nearly 7 years after broth helped to transform my health and wellness. Having a health background I have always been keen to understand how broth helped support my health, and whilst this study is for dogs, its promising for humans too.”

Anna Webb - Could Bone Broth enhance dogs microbiomes?

Initial results from this groundbreaking research are beyond promising. In fact, the project reveals how adding bone broth to 29 dogs’ daily diets for only four weeks are making a significant improvement to the dogs’ micro-bacteria and overall microbial eco system.

Poor gut health, with a lack of beneficial bacteria in dogs' biomes, is a major contributing factor. Microbiologist, Dr. Carol Hughes, explains:

“All disease begins with inflammation, and if the immune system doesn't function properly, it can lead to disease onset. Our research since 2014 shows that bone broth can significantly improve gut health by increasing microbial diversity, reducing harmful bacteria, and supporting gut wall health.”

Shockingly, in Dr Carol’s research over 14 years reveals that dogs are sicker than cats and horses in the UK. This concurs that almost 50 per cent of dogs are diagnosed with cancer before the age of 10, as highlighted in a recent study by Rafalko et al in 2023, published by PloS One.

Other studies reveal that up to one in three dogs will suffer from debilitating osteoarthritis, Another one in ten dogs can experience renal issues, and up to a third struggle with life-long skin conditions.

Anna Webb added: “I always recommend bone broth to my canine clients for a nutritional boost no matter the dog’s age or conditions. From persistent skin conditions, arthritic symptoms, even cognitive decline. It is packed with nature’s remedies including collagen, glucosamine, chondroitin, lots of different proteins, and its species appropriate, meaning its bio available to dogs, so it really aids them at a cellular level. I have always given my own dogs bone broth too, and on the basis of the initial findings from our research project, I am now drinking bone broth myself!”
